58° Biennale Arte
May 11 - November 24
The 58th Biennale Arte will open to the public in May 2019. But from a few days before the opening there will be various paints and side events that always suddenly animate the artistic life of Venice.
The title of the 58th edition of the Biennale d’Arte is May You Live In Interesting Times; the English expression is known to Anglo-Saxon speakers as the Chinese Curse – although there is no proven connection with Chinese culture for this saying – and used in an ironic way as history has widely proven that interesting periods are usually sad for most of humanity and – following Hegel – “periods of happiness are the blank pages of history“.
The 2019 Venice Art Biennale thus evokes periods of uncertainty, crisis and unrest, like those we have been experiencing in recent years. The 2019 edition is curated by Ralph Rugoff, director of the Hayward Gallery in London. Critic and essayist – he is the author of Circus Americanus (1995) – Rugoff is also active as an independent curator.
The 58th International Biennale of Art in Venice will, as always, present the participating nations in the exhibition space of the National Pavilions at the Giardini and at the Arsenale; but the historic centre of Venice will also be at the forefront of an exhibition that will involve the entire city in a scattered order that lists more than 50 exhibition venues.
The Venice Biennale will also include a catalogue of events, proposed by international institutions, which will set up their exhibitions and initiatives in Venice at the same time as the 58th International Art Exhibition in Venice.
