Moses and the Egyptians
September 13 - November 3
From September 13 to November 3, 2019, Jean-Michel Basquiat arrives in Vicenza at the Gallerie d’Italia of Palazzo Leoni Montanari.
Here you will see Moses and the Egyptians, a work donated by Bruno Bischofberger to the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao and painted by Basquiat in 1982 together with another painting, considered his twin, entitled Man from Naples.
It was at the beginning of the 1980s that Basquiat produced many of his best works. Moses and the Egyptians, in particular, refers explicitly to the tables of Moses’ law, which Basquiat made with an acid rose, which contains the name of Moses, repeated six times, the eye of God, and several other references to the biblical episode. The inscriptions are almost notes that Basquiat inserts in the canvas to desacralize it and to link it to contemporary events.
