The Women’s Burden
February 16 - April 15
The exhibition presents a selection of paintings by Valeria Costa (1912-2003) made between the late ’60s and early ’80s.
Towards the second half of the 1960s, the artist gradually abandoned raw realism, close to the new German objectivity that had characterised his early works since the end of the 1930s, to experiment with new pictorial modes, new genres and styles.
Costa seems to embrace the principles of neo-expressionist rawness with enthusiasm.
The violent use of colour and pictorial material, the almost obsessive interest in the human figure, which often appears deformed in its features and proportions, tormented, afflicted by the weight of a profound existential restlessness, are in fact the distinctive features of a series of works that Costa produced between the end of the 1960s and the 1980s.
