The Scrovegni Chapel

The Scrovegni Chapel is a Catholic church in the city centre of Padua. It contains the most important fresco cycle of the world, created by Giotto in the early 14th century.

Inside you can admire a starry sky, under which Giotto drew the episodes of Joachim and Anna’s life, those of Mary’s life and the episodes of Christ’s life and death.

The cycle of Giotto agli Scrovegni is the highest masterpiece of the painter and of the history of Western art, equal only to Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel in Rome.

With this work Giotto began a new era in the history of painting, overcoming the formal abstraction of the Byzantine art, to propose more natural and realistic human forms. And for this reason he was also called the first modern painter.

The chapel can only be visited by appointment.

Address: entrance from Civic Museums, piazza Eremitani 8
