Brusa la vecia, “Burn the old witch” is one of the most important festivals of the traditions of Verona.
The event occurs on January 6 and closes the Christmas holidays.
It is celebrated in the central Piazza Brà, where the spectacular bonfire with the old witch is staged.
In the early afternoon, “la vecia“, a ten-metre puppet filled with straw, dry wood and other combustible materials, is presented to the public.
The presentation is followed by theatrical performances that illustrate some traditional stories about Befana.
The rite, which vaguely recalls the burning of the Inquisition, on which a large number of women accused of witchcraft were sacrificed, is intended to represent the transition from the old to the new year.
